A weighbridge is often more than an operational tool. When a company buys or sells coal, grain, scrap, aggregates, feed or another commodity according to mass, the recorded weight can determine the value of the transaction.That means the weighing instrument needs to be suitable for the intended legal-for-trade application and needs to follow the applicable South African legal metrology requirements.
Approval, calibration and verification are not the same thing
These terms are often mixed together. Calibration is about checking and adjusting measurement performance. Legal verification is a separate compliance process for instruments used for prescribed trade purposes. The exact requirements depend on the instrument, approval status and use.Before buying a trade weighbridge, ask the supplier what type approval applies to the system, who performs verification, what documentation is supplied, and what ongoing verification cycle will apply.
Why it matters to the business
An incorrect or non-compliant weighing system can create disputes, incorrect invoicing and operational losses. For high-volume products, even a small error repeated across many truck loads can become expensive.A properly specified system also gives the operator a clearer audit trail and more confidence in gross, tare and net weights.
